Done properly, real estate investing pays well – very well. It affords me a lifestyle of freedom from financial worries. But at the same time this business is hard work, and there is no fallback of a secure paycheck from an employer when things don’t go well. The deals can be big, and that means the worries and the risks are just as big. So what makes it all worth it?

I’ve done some soul-searching in the last few years for a number of reasons, including business and family urgent crises, the wild swings in the economy, and some emotionally and financially difficult investing deals. I realized I needed to come to a conclusion about why real estate investing is worth it, compared with other ways I could be supporting my family.

And here’s my personal conclusion about what makes this business more than worth all the hard work and aggravation: Thanks to the wealth I’ve built through real estate investing, I Am The Master of My Time.

TIME is the most precious gift we’re given. Once it’s gone there is no getting it back; there are no do-overs to mend our regrets at our choices. The wealth I’ve earned in this business has given me the freedom to step away when my family needs me – for happy or sad reasons. I can be with my family more, to enjoy the good times and cope with those that are stressful. I’ve been able to give back with hands-on charity work. I’ve been able to enjoy beautiful days with the people I love the most!

I did not have to ask anyone’s permission when my newborn son had urgent health issues, and both he and his mother needed my presence. (He’s fully recovered and a healthy boy now!) My boys and I have spent much time together on great adventures that wouldn’t have been possible if I had a conventional career.

I no longer chase the big bucks as relentlessly as I once did (most of the time!). The greatest freedom of all is that I’ve achieved the financial independence I wanted while I still have years for my family and I to enjoy it to the fullest. To work hard, long hours to build a higher financial castle – or not – is another choice I’ve earned through real estate investing.
